He sounds very naive, but will no doubt respond once he is sufficiently embarrassed. Personally, I'd go for public humiliation amongst his friends as the more effective strategy than future employers etc
I think if his 'friends' were likely to give a toss about his indebtedness to someone who had always been extremely supportive of his musical theatre ambitions and tolerant of his flightiness, well it might be worth considering... he's in with a very superficial, different crowd now.
